Description: Thanks very much for
your interest in this lovely beach front home located on historic Harbour
Island in the Bahamas. Harbour Island is located
just off the tip of the large island of Eleuthera in the central Bahamas.
It's village of Dunmore Town was founded by the British in the 1700's.
Most of the homes built in the 1700's and 1800's remain and have been
restored and several have become small inns with bars and restaurants.
Most of these feature patios and porches for outside dining and socializing. Harbour Island is often
described as the undiscovered "Nantucket" of the Bahamas (with
palm trees and tropical flowers everywhere). It is 3 1/2 miles long and
1/2 mile wide and everybody gets around by bike, golf cart, or by walking.
Harbour Island has been featured in many magazines such as "Town
and Country", "Gourmet", "Caribbean Travel & Life",
and "Islands". The house overlooks
the island's famous 3 mile pink sand beach. It features 4 double french
doors which open to the sea, allowing the house to be filled with trade
wind breezes. It has newly been expanded and renovated with all new very
attractive furniture and decor by it's new owner. There are 4 bedrooms
and 3 baths. One bedroom has a king size bed, one has a queen bed, and
two have twins which can be made up as queens. The bedrooms are air conditioned
and there is satellite T.V. The kitchen has been completely remodeled.
The exterior of the house is surrounded by palm trees and has a patio
and a hammock. There is also a charcoal grill. Summer days and nights
are almost always cooled by the soft trade winds. During the day, the
pink sand beach along with the emerald ocean and varying cloud formations
provide an ever changing panorama. At night, looking for shooting stars
or just star gazing, can provide an evening of inexpensive entertainment
(you can almost reach out and touch the stars). For golf cart rentals
call Ross Garage 242-333-2122. The going rate is about $40 day but you
may be able to negotiate a better weekly rate. It's a ten minute bike
ride into Dunmore Town, a very pleasant village of restored colonial homes,
white picket fences, spotless churches, restaurants, and many interesting
small shops. Here you will find Arthur's Bakery. His fresh bread, sweet
rolls, and cinnamon buns are made fresh every hour. There are vegetable
and fruit stands and fresh fish and crawfish (lobster) can be bought at
the government dock or ordered ahead of time at the Fruit & Veg Store
across the street. If you are interested
in a more active life, scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, windsurfing,
sailing and tennis are readily available. Outboard boats are available
for rent. Most of the above sports are located at the Romora Bay club
of which we (and you) are members. This fine small resort is right across
the island from the house and you will have free use of their facilities
including pool, tennis courts, kayaks, and windsurfers. You will also
receive a 15% discount on food and drink. For sunsets its fun
to go to the Harbour Lounge (also known as Judy's) or to the Romora Bay
Club, or The Marina. Once a week there is a "Jump Up" under
the fig tree located in front of the Harbour Lounge with a live band.
There is The Seagrapes, a local nightclub with entertainment for both
locals and visitors. The Coral Sands usually has a live band on Fridays
on their outside terrace. You should also not miss Chris Blackwell's restoration
of the Pink Sand Beach Club. Those who have heard of him know what he
can do. It's expensive, extremely interesting, stunning and you should
walk through it and have lunch, dinner, or a drink. Anywhere you go on
the island you will find friendly people and you will be welcome everywhere.
The local pool hall and bar is called "Willie's" and Frank,
the owner (isn't every bar named Willie's owned by a Frank?@!?), is a
very good pool player and a super person to talk to about island history.
The decor is rustic with a huge tree growing in the middle of the building. Two very nice days can
be spent off island. Rent a car and explore all of Eleuthera which is
over 100 miles long and very interesting. Another day you can hire a small
boat and captain and have him take you on the intricate 12 mile trip to
the island of Spanish Wells. The island is very prosperous and interesting
and the ride inside the reef is exciting. At the "Devil's Backbone"
your boat is almost on the beach. Several days can also be spent in your
own small boat. There are a number of sources who rent these boats. AIRLINES: Getting to Harbour Island
is easy through North Eleuthera Airport with air service several times
a day via West Palm, Ft. Lauderdale and Miami. Some of the carriers are
U.S. Airways, Bahamas Air, Gulfstream Airlines (Continental) and several
others. When you arrive at North Eleuthera airport, take a 3 minute taxi
ride to the ferry dock for Harbour Island. You then get a $4 water taxi
to Harbour Island. It is during this 10 minute boat ride that you first
experience freedom from the real Rates:
