Description: Thank you for inquiring about Mermaid House on Great Exuma Island in the Bahamas. The house is located on a beautiful ocean beach 6 miles north of Georgetown, a most delightful out island community. Historically, Great Exuma is one of the most interesting islands in the Bahamas with some first rate scenery. Thanks to Georgetown and Elizabeth Harbour, the island has been in turn a pirate rendevous and a refitting base for British Man-0-Wars. Before slavery was abolished, the fertile countryside prospered with plantations established by American Loyalists who fled the U.S. after the Revolutionary War. Roads run the length of Great and Little Exuma (connected by a bridge) north to Rolleville and south to Williams Town. Both routes make worthwhile excursions with stops at such interesting places as Moss Town, The Forest, and Roker's Point. Along the route you'll see remains of the old plantations. At the head of the government dock in Georgetown is the handsome colonial style Government Building. The island administrator has an office there along with the post office. There is a large pond in the middle of the town with an outlet to Elizabeth Harbour under the small drawbridge. Boat rental and diving companies have shops on this pond. Club Peace and Plenty on the Harbour is the social focal point of the town. It has a wonderful atmosphere, a fine restaurant, and an intimate friendly bar in an historic building. On dance nights there's live music on the terrace overlooking the water. The Peace and Plenty runs a ferry service from the hotel to Stocking Island's beach. Everyone is welcome. In town, Sam's place serves very good breakfeasts, lunches, and dinners. Across the street is Denzella Rolle's N&D Fruits and Vegetables. Besides her super fresh produce she has ice cream, conch salad, coffee, and hot dogs. Don't leave without meeting Denzella, observer of the human condition, philosopher, and humorist, Up the hill from the Peace and Plenty is the Sandpiper, an exceptional Bahamian crafts gift shop. Across the pond is Eddie's Edgewater serving all meals (excellent fresh fish, conch, and chicken) On Mondays and Thursday evenings, hors d'oeuvres are free and a local "rake and scrape" band plays. Exuma Markets carries a large stock of groceries, produce, dairy products, and meat. South of the park is the Town Cafe where all meals and baked goods are served.. There is dark's Hardware and Darville's Store. There is also the Top and Bottom, a small marine hardware and tackle shop. A popular happy hour meeting place is the Two Turtles Inn. There is casual dining inside and out and a bar. They have Friday night barbeques and Tuesday fish fries. The Flamingo Bay Restaurant also serves delicious meals. There is a government Clinic where a doctor, nurse, and dentist keep regular hours. Elizabeth Harbour offers
an extremely interesting boating area which can only be called fabulous.
Stocking Island deserves special mention. It has a most magnificent palm
lined beach on the ocean side and many interesting channels which run
into the interior of the island. The beach has a bar/restaurant run by
the Peace and Plenty. You could explore around this island for days. Needless
to say, the snorkeling, diving, fishing, and swimming are superb. The House: Mermaid House was built
in 2002 and has 2000 sq, ft. of living space and a wrap around porch,
right on magnificent 2 mile long Tar Bay beach. The full length covered
porch on the ocean side has a teak table and chairs for outside dining
and teak chairs and chaise lounges as well. A path leads to the beach
where the water is The house has central airconditioning and ceiling fans in every room. There are 3 bedrooms and 2 Vz baths and 2 outside showers. The house sleeps 6 (8) people and all bedrooms have king size beds. The master bedroom has sliding doors opening to the ocean front porch and its large adjacent bathroom has a stall shower. The 2nd and 3rd bedrooms share a bathroom. One of these bedrooms is on the ocean side with sliding doors opening onto the covered porch while the other has french doors opening on the side deck. All bathrooms have double sinks and all linens and towels are provided. The living, dining, and kitchen areas are all open with high ceilings. The living and dining room are all on the ocean side and the view is magnificent through 2 sliding doors and a large window. You will never forget the multi-hewed colors of blue and green of the ocean as you dine either inside or outside on the porch (tables seat 8). The comfortable living room has a convertible couch and 4 armchairs and has satellite TV, DVD, and a stereo. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a microwave oven, dishwasher, coffee maker, blender, toaster, and just about anything else you need. There is a laundry room with washer and dryer.
